Identity Boxes

Marin School of the Arts

In this project 9th Grade students developed their sculptural technique and created a lexicon of personal symbolism using found objects. After studying the assemblage boxes of Joseph Cornell, Betye Saar, and Lucas Samaras, students started by writing and reflecting on personal memories, and brainstormed ideas for objects and images that could represent a memory or experience to share. After sketching a design plan, they gathered found objects to start arranging their sculpture box. Students had to develop strategies and skill to create the best assmblage using the best craftsmanship they could achieve. After finishing their assemblage, each student wrote a reflection describing their theme and technique.
